I feel that interiors have changed quite drastically the last few years – you might want to thank Joanna Gaines for spreading the love of bolder interiors with a rustic flair. But interior trends are rapidly changing not only because HGTV celebrity designer influences are everywhere these days, but mostly because homeowners seem to not be as afraid of going a step further to really bring their personality into their homes. They are now, more than ever, willing to experiment and allow different cultural elements to be part of their home throughout furniture and home decor.
Read on to know more details on the new home design trends for this year.
1. Black Metals
Black metal elements are stronger than ever and you will be able to see more of them everywhere, from magazines to your favorite stores. We will also continue to see plenty of homes with black steel windows and more matte black light fixtures, cabinet hardware and furniture, like we see above.

2. Walnut Cabinetry & Furniture
White Oak has been loved by so many for quite some time now but Walnut is making its way! Interior designers are using it on cabinets and countertops while furniture companies are designing fresh new pieces using this gorgeous wood. Stain color will vary, from medium-light to dark as long it allows the natural grain to show through.

3. Statement Flooring

The statement flooring trend is not going anywhere just yet! Herringbone-patterned floors are the most popular and will continue to be. Think outside the box and try it with different material, such as the tumbled cobble stone seen above.
4. Natural Material Lighting
Woven is often the “magical touch” that many spaces need. It brings warmth almost immediately and woven lighting is becoming a strong alternative to replace metal. It works beautifully in many interior styles but I often prefer it in coastal interiors.

5. High Contrast Interiors
{Paint Color: Narragansett Green by Benjamin Moore. Design: Sudio McGee.}
Expect to see interiors that use color and decor to create more impact. When using a saturate color, make sure to balance it with natural elements of white to make the space feel more harmonious. The picture above is a good example of that.
6. Warm Paint Colors
I am certain that this trend started with Benjamin Moore choosing “Caliente AF-290” as the “Color of the Year“. We are now seeing interior designers using warmer colors without hesitation. If you’re like me, you wouldn’t like living with too much color on the walls but you shouldn’t be afraid to refresh the color on your front door with something that feels current and a bit daring.

7. Velvet
From the catwalk to our homes, velvet will be the fabric of 2018! Although I can’t see this trend surviving summer, I think this is a great time to refresh your home with some velvet pillows or bedding. I have seen people using it on walls (instead of wallpaper) but that’s something a bit too daring for myself. But if you love how this soft and luxurious fabric feels why not invest in a beautiful piece of furniture like the velvet sofa above? Certain pieces are so timeless that you really don’t have to worry about trends.

8. Bold Kitchens
Although I honestly can say that I don’t think that white kitchens will ever stop being admired, bolder kitchens are appearing everywhere! Designers are not only adding color to the islands but also to the cabinetry. This trend is not for everyone – the designer needs to be good enough to know how to balance all of the elements (so you don’t end up with an overwhelming space) and you need to choose a color that makes you happy. The kitchen above is a great example of how to beautifully combine color with elements that compliment it.
Don’t be afraid to bring even more color and personality to your kitchen with a gorgeous Persian rug!
