Happy new week, my friends! I hope you had a great weekend and this week brings lots of health and Blessings to our lives!
I am happy to be featuring Amanda from OurSouthernStory on our “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” today. Amanda will be sharing details of her renovated home and there’s plenty to learn from this homeowner. I personally am loving her kitchen! The cabinets are from Ikea and are made entirely from recycled plastic bottles, which you would never guess by looking at them! Trust me, you will learn a thing or two with Amanda today. Read on!
Hi everyone! My name is Amanda of @oursouthernstory. I’m so excited and grateful to be featured by Luciane here on Home Bunch! I was following along and saving inspiration from this beautiful site long before I ever dreamed up my Instagram account. I am so honored to be featured alongside so many other talented designers and homeowners!
I married my high school sweetheart my senior year of college, and I finally found my calling as a Mama (who dabbles in real estate) seven years later. We’re Atlanta natives (something that is becoming more and more of a rarity these days!), and we love our city! I created @oursouthernstory as a place to share tidbits about our lives in and around the city, and as a place for friends and family to follow along as we are constantly changing and updating our home.
A little over four years ago, we decided to buy our first house in the Ormewood Park neighborhood of Atlanta. It is on the southeast side of town, and will (very!) soon be connected to the rest of the city by the Beltline, which will ultimately connect 45 intown neighborhoods via a 22-mile loop of multi-use trails, modern streetcar, and parks – all based on railroad corridors that formerly encircled Atlanta. It is a very exciting time to be an Atlantan!
We live in a 1,000 square foot, 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom cape-cod-style house, circa 1925, that needed a good bit of cosmetic work when we moved in. It was completely live-able, though, and other than adding lots of white paint, we did very little work on it to it up until the last year. In the past couple of months, we have torn out and remodeled the kitchen, laundry room, and bathroom. It’s all still very much a work in progress, but I’m really excited to be able to share our home with you here. I hope that you enjoy the tour!
Beautiful Homes of Instagram
Amanda’s home is on the small size and she has a great sense of scale and style. White walls create a sense of expansiveness.
Round Brass Mirror: Target – similar here (other sizes) & here.
Armoire: Vintage.
White Brick Fireplace Paint Color
I consider myself somewhat of a minimalist, except when it comes to books. I have been collecting old books since college, and I’m always moving the prettiest ones around the house.
Paint color: Behr Ultra Pure White.
Similar White Herringbone Mosaic Tile: here & here (marble).
Coffee Table
Coffee Table: West Elm – similar here & here.
Rugs: World Market & HomeGoods (Patterned Rug) – similar here, here & here.
Sofa
I like to buy and sell furniture (and kids’ clothes!) on Facebook Marketplace, so when I saw an Article Sven sofa for sale by a friend of a friend, I jumped on the deal! In the photos, it looked black, and my black and white loving heart skipped a beat. I sent my husband to pick it up, and as he was bringing it through the door, he mentioned “you know this is blue, right?” Of course he hadn’t called to check with me before they loaded it on the truck and brought it home. I was sad about it for a couple of days, but now I wouldn’t have it any other way! It is uniquely mine, and I love my blue sofa!
The artwork by the window is actually album art! My husband and I love to collect and listen to records, but when I came home from work and saw the Absent Sounds record by From Indian Lakes on the kitchen table, I was certain it was a gorgeous piece of artwork that my husband had found for me! Not so, and I had to buy him a second copy before he would let me cut and frame it.

Floor Lamp: Target Lemke Floor Lamp.
Lumbar Pillows: Target Chenille Pillow.
Artwork: Jenny’s Print Shop artwork.
Bookshelf
My husband’s late grandfather drew the picture of the baseball glove many moons ago. It’s fun to figure out ways to incorporate things my husband loves, like baseball, into my design choices.
Metal Bookshelf: Ikea VITTSJÖ.
Before
The original pine flooring ran through both bedrooms and under a newer laminate flooring that was in the dining room and living room. We pulled the laminate floors up hoping to find some beautiful, intact pine, but alas, long ago, someone decided that the best way to lay the new flooring was with gallons and gallons of glue right on top of the old floors. After three separate contractors told us that the glue covered mess we uncovered was un-salvageable, we decided to put new hardwoods down in the entire house.
After
We chose a 2.25” solid oak hardwood from Floor and Decor.
Flooring: WingWood Natural Oak Smooth Solid Hardwood.
Reno
The original kitchen was tiny, closed off, and dark. While I hate to see architectural details lost when old homes are turned into open floorplans, we decided that it was the best decision to widen the doorways on either side of the kitchen in order to bring in more light and to add a considerable amount of counter space. We kept cased openings on either side, and mimicked the original wide trim to maintain the historic charm that we fell in love with when we bought the house.
Kitchen
The kitchen now features a practical layout and it’s very welcoming. I love the butcher’s block countertop with the black cabinetry. Great combination!
Refrigerator: Blomberg refrigerator.
Shelves
The Birch brackets are from Ikea; Ekby Valter Bracket, birch.
Similar Shelves: here.
Barn Light Sconces: All Modern.
Range: Frigidaire Gallery.

Bowls: William-Sonoma.
Napkins: World Market.
Banquette Pillows
Pillows: HomeGoods – similar pillows: Plaid & Faux Fur.
Chairs: Ikea.
Pottery
Pottery: Antique – similar here.
Cabinetry
I fell in love the moment I saw the new matte black KUNGSBACKA cabinet fronts at IKEA. In a collaboration with Form Us With Love, they created the first kitchen fronts line made entirely from recycled plastic bottles and reclaimed industrial wood. Twenty five plastic bottles are used for every 40x80cm unit.
Kitchen Cabinet: Ikea KUNGSBACKA cabinet doors.
Sunroom
We replaced the old broken louvered windows in this room to make it usable year round. We now use it for office space and a music practice space for my husband.
Chair: Vintage – similar here.
Desk: Ikea – similar here.
Bookshelves: here.
Piano
This old piano sits in our tiny sunroom. My grandmother was given the choice between a new car and a piano for her high school graduation gift. She chose the car, but then found out that she wouldn’t be able to have a car on her college campus, so she settled on the piano instead. I, for one, am glad she made that choice.
Son’s Bedroom
When we decided to transition our son into his big kid bed, it only felt right to use the same bed that my father and then my brother had both used as children. We have a matching set, and they can be stacked as bunk beds.
Paint Color: Behr Ultra Pure White.
Pillow: Target.
Memories
The table and chairs belonged to my mother when she was a little girl. I remember playing at it when I was a child, and I love that my Henry will have those same memories! I am so glad that my grandmother thought to hang on to them for all these years!
Dresser: Ikea.
Rug: Word Market.
Bathroom
Before the renovation, a pedestal sink sat directly in front of the toilet, making it difficult to bathe our son, and giving us zero storage – a necessity in our only bathroom. We moved the vanity to the other side of the bathroom, and it feels twice as big!
Vanity: Fresca 30″ Vanity.
Faucet: Rozin.
Shower Curtain: Target.
Floor Tile: Here.
Bath Mat: World Market.
Bathroom Paint Color
Paint Color: Valspar – The Perfect White (semi-gloss wainscoting and eggshell walls).
Sconce: Etsy.
Towel: World Market.
Master Bedroom
Our bedroom is on the small size – no king size bed here! As is typical in older homes, the closet was minuscule – the size of a small closet door. We doubled its size by cutting into the closet in the dining room. It is now a reach in with double doors, and while I’m sure some people would fill it right up, it comfortably fits my capsule wardrobe along with all of my husband’s work clothes.
Paint Color: Behr Ultra Pure White.
Nightstand: Ikea; Rast – Beautiful Nightstands: here, here, here, here, here & here.
Quilt: Target.
Curtains: Ikea – similar here.
Throw Blanket: Ikea; Tuvalie Trow – similar here, here & here.
Table Lamp: Vintage.
