Moving up to a newer, larger home is a dream many homeowners share. The idea of all the kids having their own bedroom, moving your work from the kitchen table into a home office, or making your bedroom a more versatile space, it’s no wonder so many dream of more square footage in their lives.
Just because you have limited space or are not in your dream home yet doesn’t mean you have to put all your house wants on hold. Sure, you may be saving up a moving fund and working on adding value to your home, but there’s no rule that says you can’t make the home you have more enjoyable while you’re living there. If your home isn’t meeting the needs of your family, and you want to get more out of the home you have now, implement these tricks to enhance your space.
Reclaim the Guest room
If you’re like many good homeowners, you keep a guest room on hand just in case anyone (your family) wants to come for a visit. While it’s nice to have a place for family and friends to stay, and you may like keeping that space available for them, a guest room is also a lot of space that goes unused most of the time.
So, it’s time to start thinking outside the box spring. Getting rid of the traditional bed in a guest room, and installing a Murphy bed (or wall bed) instead, allows you to retain the original utility of the room – a place for people to stay – while opening up the space for any other purpose while no one is in town.
Playroom? Game room? Home office? Gym? Game table manufacturers and fitness suppliers are making a number of portable products these days, from fold-up pool tables to compact treadmills, so, once the space is free, the opportunities are many.
Murphy beds typically add value to a home, so the upgrade will pay for itself.
Start Thinking of your Outdoor Space as Part of the House.
What are you doing with your outdoor space? Are you utilizing it, or just maintaining it? While a garden is always a good use of yard space, the outside of your home can be more than just plants and occasional cookouts.
Pretty much anything you can buy for indoors, you can buy for outdoors. Fitness equipment, ping pong tables, even giant projection screens and beds. Instead of looking around the house and wondering how you’re going to fit one more thing inside, start looking outward and thinking how you might use that space to compliment the space you’re already using.
Use your Basement or your Attic.
Like yards, basements and attics often go unused in a home. Maybe for good reason. Both can be difficult to access, and neither typically has the same heating and cooling (at least in older homes) as the main area of the house. But that doesn’t mean you have to let that space go to waste.
Some activities, like working out, don’t require the same moderate temperatures as relaxing in your house (though, you may want to skip the cardio in the dead of summer). Or you can explore portable heating and cooling options.
A third option is to use the extra space only part of the year. What’s wrong with having a rec room that’s only comfortable in the spring and fall? Summer festivals and winter holidays can keep you busy during the extreme seasons anyway, and you’ll have a great space for the down seasons.
Alex at Modern Home Pulse recommends a home bar, game room, outdoor kitchen, or even just an outdoor pizza oven as seasonal additions that make homeowners feel as if they are getting a lot more life out of their living space.
Invest in Storage
Increasing the storage in your home may be the simplest way to optimize space. It won’t add to your living space, but it can still make it feel as though you have more room.
“A place for everything, and everything in its place” isn’t just an old adage; it’s actually really good advice. By having enough closets, cupboards, or drawers in a room, you can make the same space serve multiple purposes. You might turn that reclaimed guest room into a game room/gym/craft room, and still have room to pull down the Murphy bed when someone comes to town.
